First, do no harm...
Screening is a huge privilege. You can change people's lives, so it's critical that it is done well. Before you begin your screening journey, it's important that you feel prepared. You can protect the children, young people and families you will be working with, as well as yourself, by actioning these three steps below before you start:
Using Brené Brown's free exercises, consider what is important to you? What is important for the children, young people and families you are going to be working with? When you know your values, you get to live by them; and this means you'll take good care of the children you'll be working with. Click to find out more.
3. Prioritise Ethics and Safety
You might have a particular child in mind, or you might be looking to develop screening across your setting. Either way, thinking carefully about what you want to test for and why means writing a screening protocol. It doesn't have to be complicated, but it should be clear. Click to find out more.

Handwriting and Sensory
Screen for potential difficulties with handwriting; movement planning (praxis) and sensory integration.
Executive Function
Screen for social and economic risk factors; and difficulties with working memory; impulsivity and shift. A skillset which enables us to manipulate information and problem-solve, manage attention and respond flexibly to different situations.
Social, Emotional, Mental Health
Screen for potential difficulties with self-efficacy, wellbeing and maths anxiety; as well as considering the presence of trauma, anxiety and avoidance in some of the more challenging behaviours we see in children and young people.
