Back in 2017, I felt compelled to launch a research project into the wellbeing, deployment and effectiveness of SENCOs, stemming from my own lived experiences and my awareness of the themes regularly coming up in SENCO social media groups. It became the largest SENCO research project in over twenty years with nearly 2000 participants. From it we were able to measure very distressing statistics about the education system and its provision for children and young people with identified SEND. Sadly, nearly eight years later, the situation seems worse now than it's ever been.

And yet it's not.

The figures and experiences may be awful and SENCO turnover might be at its highest, but we are having a conversation about it. It's no longer a hidden problem but a known one. We are a lot further forward that we were in 2017.

But, we have a duty to capitalise on the many opportunities that this crisis is highlighting. We have a duty to act. That's why I'm so grateful to Schools Week for continuing to explore the issues SENCOs are facing on the front line and for advocating for change at the highest level.

We can do this.
