Listen to the episode

Hannah and Naomi Ashman discuss how beginning a screening protocol in a primary setting is going; things to think about and the exciting opportunities ahead. As both are currently enjoying studying for EdDs, they also consider the importance of research and how they balance the roles of SENCO, family and doctoral research. As an adoptive parent, Naomi also shares about the landscape of foster care and the barriers that care-experienced children often face.

About Naomi...
Naomi has taught for 18 years in primary schools across both the state and independent sectors. She has previously worked as Head of PSHE and Head of Religious Education. In her role as Director of Learning Success, Naomi oversees SEND and EAL provision. She works closely with staff, pupils, and families to nurture a culture of belonging, support, and high expectations for all learners, striving to remove barriers to learning so that every child reaches their potential.
Faith, family and friends are important to Naomi. She certainly doesn't claim to be an expert, but much of what she has learned has been from experience - from and through her children! As a former foster carer and an adoptive parent, she is passionate about championing vulnerable children and facilitating opportunities for pupils to overcome disadvantage.
As a lifelong learner, Naomi is enthusiastic about implementing evidence-informed practice herself and translating research into meaningful support for colleagues. In 2012, she gained an MSc in Learning and Teaching from the University of Oxford and is now studying toward an EdD at University College London. Her current research focuses on the professional development needs of SENCOs. She loves championing inclusive practices, supporting fellow educators, and shaping high-quality professional development opportunities that truly respond to the evolving needs of our schools and their pupils.
